Decolonising Queer Poetry | 5 Sessions | £100
Join Gayathiri Kamalakanthan in a monthly workshop exploring how trans and queer poets make and break language rules to decolonise false categories that we put humans into. Poets include Mary Jean Chan, Chen Chen, Alok Vaid-Menon and Danez Smith. There’ll be space to write/share our own responses.

The Course
No experience or former knowledge necessary - the space is welcoming of those who might not have explored these ideas before.
We’ll explore about how trans and queer poets make and break language rules to decolonise false categories that we put humans into. Poets will include: Mary Jean Chan, Chen Chen, Alok Vaid-Menon, Danez Smith, adrienne maree brown. There’ll be space to write and share our own responses too!
In a typical session we will:
● Read 2-3 poems together
● Discuss exploratory questions designed by facilitator. We’ll examinetechniques the poets use to construct new worlds/frameworks for how wecould live outside of the colonial imagination.
● There will be 1 writing prompt per poem and time to write your responses
● Sharing time

About Gayathir Kamlakanthan
Gayathiri is a Tamil poet and sex education facilitator. They are interested in how language shapes childhood and how we use it to decolonise the future. Gayathiri won the Faber & Andlyn Publisher’s Prize 2022, the Primadonna Fiction Prize 2021 and they were shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize 2022. Their writing is published in bath magg, Magma, Propel, Hoax, Burnt Roti and zindabad zine. They've previously facilitated with Out on the Page, Stonewall, Wilderness Festival, Apples and Snakes and UK Black Pride.
