Vivacious Villanelles | Workshop | £15

Villanelle is not just a character in Killing Eve. It's a fixed-form poetry type that uses rhyme and repetition throughout its short, sharp form. Joint Terrance Marshman-Edwards to find out more and have a go at writing one yourself! Aimed at writers with some experience of writing poetry.

About the Event

About the Workshop

With only two different rhyming sounds throughout, it may seem like a rigid and uninteresting format but has been used by poets as diverse as Dylan Thomas, Wendy Cope, and Elizabeth Bishop to create howls of rage, good advice for life, or even warnings about the press.

The workshop will include:

  • A brief history of the villanelle
  • An explanation of the “rules” and structure of the form, using some well-known examples to illustrate these points.
  • A step-by-step/stage-by-stage explanation of how to write one of your own

I aim to make the session accessible for all- the idea is to pull back the curtain and show the form isn’t as complex or complicated as people may think. By the end of the event, I hope that attendees will have an understanding of the rules of the form, and the confidence to try writing one themselves.

Partial Bursaries for writers who would otherwise be unable to attend are available for this workshop. To enquire about a bursary please email Paul, his email address is contact@outonthepage.co.uk
