Hi Paul, thanks for setting up this live chat today. I am interested in hearing experiences of the various paid writing courses and workshops out there online at the moment. Curtis Brown Creative offer some, I know Arvon does. What experiences do people have of these and are there others that are worth learning more about? Also, are these good value for money? Thanks, Andrew.
Hi Andrew - sorry for the delay! I've seen good feedback re. the Toby Litt which is free. Across all the in-person retreats I've run, Arvon is seen as high quality. Have you ever been on any paid courses or workshops?
I've been on Arvon, which perhaps down to luck and the group I was with, personally worked very well for me. But I have heard the group dynamics can differ and that can make a big difference to your enjoyment of a retreat. That said, their tutors are top-notch. For now, their online offer looks promising. I'm currently weighing up whether to go on an online 6 week Curtis Brown Creative course, but feel the £ might be a stretch.
Yes, the Arvon at Home offer looks better value for money in some respects than their retreats. Given that you're already putting short works out there, and, have a novel in draft; I'd be tempted by the Arvon 1:1 if you carefully chose the writer you'd want to receive that from.
Also, you might want to consider a literary consultancy like TLC as a possible route to a read or a mentor. Quite a few regional writing agencies have deals with TLC for Free Reads through a selective process. Where are you based Andrew?
How much was Curtis Brown Creative?
They are offering a six week online course for 175, which sounds competitive and comparable to other providers, so it's less they are expensive and more me just judging whether they are uniquely worth going with. I will check out TLC for sure, sounds good. Thanks, Paul!
Hi guys, my name's David. Just joined you here. I'm at editing stage of my new LGBTQ+ non-fiction book. Any editors here?
Hi David - I'm not sure if there are any here right now, but have a look through the published profiles in the Members Directory. Did you make contact with Nick the Editor?
You could also start a separate thread of your own. If you go back to the list of discussions. I think you can add it there. That way, people coming in will see right away that you are looking for an editor.
Okay, thanks Paul. It might take me a bit to find my way around 😃
Sure, take your time. I check the Forum posts every day and then once a week I'm in here live for 3 hours.
Hi everyone - just to let you know I'm leaving the room at 1pm. It's been good to chat and see you around.
