Hello Paul! Hope this week is going well for you. 😊
Yeah - I'm going to send a message in 1:1 area as a test...
Hello! First time using this. I'm Jade, struggling to write at the minute. Is anyone else finding it difficult to get to grips with a new writing routine?
Yes, absolutely! I'm so terrible at writing without the threat of a deadline. All this free time is actually feeling like the opposite.
Yes! I actually have less time than before lockdown so it took me month to carve out the time, but I have. The writing itself then feels sluggish and difficult, but it is slowly coming back.
@Jonathan Sanders Pizarro I'm tempted to set you a deadline.
Once I get a job and this quarantine is over, I definitely need to join a writing group that meets once a week.
Yes, London has lots of opportunities. I also was impressed by an attendee at our last London event who was part of small group of 3 writers who are committed to supporting each others writing. They meet once a month and provide detailed supportive critiquing of each others writing, as well as that affirming thing of reflecting on goals, setting goals.
I also feel like I have less time in a way. I’m furloughed from my job but stuck indoors with two small children. By the time they’re asleep, I’m exhausted! Also chronic pain is kicking the crap out of me as it’s worse when stressed. I tend to set myself deadlines but I still haven’t worked out a routine that works, especially not for my big project
Oh deep respect for anyone with children. I've been inspired by Frank O'Hara, who used to write on his lunch break. There's also the story about Toni Morrison who would write with a baby in her lap and who once said she wrote around the spittle her baby put on her writing pad, because she just had to write. I hope to reach that level of discipline.
@Jonathan Sanders Pizarro Wrote my university dissertation in exactly that scenario. 1 year old on my lap, screaming, trying everything to just get it finished. That was one of the longest nights of my life. I now get up at 5am to write before he wakes up. Cannot do it around him at all, he is the loudest thing alive.
Also, @Jade Mutyora Richards I'm sorry to hear you're in so much pain. I have also been furloughed, so got another job at a supermarket because I've been freaking out about money. Single parent to an almost 5 year old. I feel you with the deadlines. I have had weeks where I can write every morning new content. Scene/perspective change a day. Then a flatline. Force break. Go back. Edit like mad. Look again. Sigh, because instead of being 4 chapters ahead, I've shrunk my existing ones and yeah. I've been waiting to finish this particular act for a good 6 months. Had to change it very suddenly because the scheduled pandemic that was supposed to occur in the book, actually happened. On time and all.
Blew my content and plotline out of the water. Had to readjust to approx 2/3 years in the future with a secondary mutated strain and post lockdown lives.
Works better now in a weird way, but considering I get like, between 8 and 16 hours per week to write on a good week, I am way behind. Every break I take makes it feel like it's dragging it out. But good days on the house or with lil man somehow gives me more energy to write again. I am banking on that.
I hope you find something that works soon, and some rest!!! One child is too much already. I can't imagine two.
@Daniel Varian It's amazing you find that amount of time. Is it a novel you are writing ?
Heya, only just put the small man to bed, may not be super responsive, still have to blast through budgets, but hi anyway!
Hi Daniel - no worries - great to see you here!
@Paul BC - Coordinator Thank you! You too
